Torres is not for sale

Liverpool have announced that Spanish striker Fernando Torres is not for sale. Manager Roy Hodgson traveled to Spain with managing director Christian Purslow to meet with the striker, who was injured in the World Cup Final, where Spain defeated the Netherlands in extra time. "I have met with Fernando. I found him to be a very pleasant man and we had a nice conversation," said Hodgson. "As far as we are concerned he is a Liverpool player and we want him to remain a Liverpool player. He is not for sale and we don't welcome any offers for him."

Torres' future was in doubt because of the financial turmoil and high debt of the club, coupled with their disappointing performance last season that failed to see them qualify for the Champions League. Most notably, Chelsea had reportedly prepared a bid for Torres, and they are thought to still have interest in the Spanish international, despite his recent injury.

Like Torres, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard had also been linked to a move away from Anfield. However, primary suitors Real Madrid have apparently decided that the pricetag for the 30-year old center midfielder was too high. Hodgson has spoken with Gerrard, as well, and claims that he too will play for Liverpool next year. The squad's other question mark, Javier Mascherano, however, has not been in contact with Hodgson as he contemplates a move to Inter to rejoin former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.
